Jazz Concert

Amnesty Jazz

Tuesday 11th June, 7.30pm

St Andrew's and St George's West
120 Minutes

Last year's concert was a sell-out with all funds going to Amnesty International. Join us again for what promises to be a wonderful evening, directed by Andrew Robb and featuring the music from Fats Waller, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler.

The music for this year's jazz concert is derived predominantly from the mid 1960s, a period of time when jazz music was undergoing substantial experimentation and development away from traditional styles.

The programme follows a journey which tells the story of how composers and improvisers began to move away from the American Songbook song structure and its use of functional harmony, to more open compositional structures and use of non-functional harmony. Crucial developments at the time were the application of  modal harmony and a more conversational, rhythmic approach whilst improvising. These changes lay the foundations for how jazz musicians today think about improvisation.

Tickets £8, concessions £5, schoolchildren free.  Available from St Mary's Music School main office, tel 0131 538 7766, email and on the door on the night.

All proceeds in support of Amnesty International
