Located in the heart of Edinburgh

St Mary's Music School is fortunate to be located in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city and one of the cultural capitals of the world, alive with music, theatre and the arts year-round.

Our home is historic Coates Hall, situated on a quiet leafy crescent in the heart of Edinburgh and surrounded by gardens where our pupils can relax and play at break time.  The main building was formerly a theological college and was built in the Victoria era.  Four other buildings sit on the campus: Fives Court (academic), Principal's House (academic), the Annexe (music and guidance) and the Lodge (finance and administration).

The extensive grounds include a multi-sports court, greenhouse (used by both staff and pupils) and large lawn.

Edinburgh, Festival City of Music

Our beautiful city of Edinburgh, one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, is a captivating mix of elegant Georgian architecture in the New Town, medieval lanes and cobbled streets in the Old Town, and an inimitable sense of atmosphere and vibrancy throughout the city. This is especially true during the month of August when the Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe dominate the city with thousands of performances and events.

Artistic and cultural life thrives all year round in Edinburgh. Musically the city offers some splendid venues including the grand Usher Hall which is on our doorstep; the Festival Theatre, The Queen's Hall and St Cecilia’s Hall of the University of Edinburgh. These venues attract outstanding soloists and orchestras (including Royal Scottish National OrchestraScottish Chamber OrchestraBBC Scottish Symphony OrchestraHebrides EnsembleScottish Ensemble and Dunedin Consort, all of whom support our work), as well as specialised baroque and contemporary ensembles and live opera. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is just 50 minutes away in Glasgow.

There is a visit into town, for an orchestral or chamber music concert, to the opera or ballet every week of the school year.

Easy access

St Mary's Music School is located just a few minutes walk from Haymarket train station from where there are also direct links by tram and bus to Edinburgh International Airport and Edinburgh's Waverley Train Station, so access to the school is easy wherever you come from.
