School & academic life

An incredible journey of intellectual and personal growth

St Mary’s Music School is co-educational and non-denominational, and our pupils come from Scotland, the UK and overseas. This international mix means that from the earliest age, everyone experience the richness of different cultural approaches to music, to education, and to life. The education we offer here is nothing if not well rounded!

Despite the fact that admission to St Mary’s Music School is based purely on musical potential and not on academic prowess, high academic achievement resonates here through a personalised education framework that’s aligned to Scottish Government Guidelines and the Curriculum for Excellence. From foundation learning to National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher and A-level qualifications, our pupils engage in an incredible journey of intellectual and personal growth.

All of our choristers are day pupils, living at home in Edinburgh, but around a third of our instrumentalists enjoy the boarding experience, benefitting hugely from the warm and safe home-from-home environment that our Boarding Team cultivates. Numerous trips and outings ensure that both day pupils and boarders make the most of Life in a Cultural Capital.

We have consistently secured the top spot among the Scottish independent schools for academic excellence in Highers, reflecting our commitment to providing a robust and tailored education through our Academic Curriculum.

A combination of small class sizes, excellent and enthusiastic teachers and bright young minds means our pupils enjoy a well-rounded education, with a focus on core subjects as well as specialised courses such as Academic Music, which lead to music-specific qualifications such as the Cambridge iGCSE, SQA Advanced Higher and Cambridge Pre-U.
