Life in a Cultural Capital
A host of activities, right on our doorstep
St Mary’s Music School is located in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland’s vibrant capital city and one of the cultural capitals of the world, alive with music, theatre and the arts all year long.
The beautiful city of Edinburgh, one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, is a captivating mix of the elegant Georgian architecture of the New Town and the medieval lanes and cobbled streets of the Old Town. An inimitable atmosphere and vibrancy pervades the city and this is especially true during August, when the Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe dominate the city with thousands of performances and events.
A city of splendid cultural venues
Artistic and cultural live thrives all year round in Edinburgh, however, not just during August! Musically, the city offers splendid venues including the Usher Hall, Festival Theatre, The Queen’s Hall and St Cecilia’s Hall, all of which are right on our doorstep. These venues attract outstanding performances from Scotland’s own national orchestras – the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Hebrides Ensemble, Scottish Ensemble and Dunedin Consort – all of whom are enthusiastic supporters of our work at St Mary’s Music School and, of course, our pupils. From Baroque to contemporary music, and from opera to ballet to theatre, a wealth of local, national and international culture graces Edinburgh’s stages throughout the year, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is just over 50 miles away (under an hour by train) in Glasgow. |
