Frequently Asked Questions
Q. There are lots of music classes available in Edinburgh. Why should my child attend Saturday Music Classes at St Mary's Music School?
Our Saturday Music Classes began over 40 years ago and during that time we have seen thousands of children flourish and develop their musical skills. Our teachers are all carefully selected and are expert at what they do. Many also teach at the main music school and follow their own successful music careers.
Q. What level does my child need to be to join a class?
You don’t need any previous experience at all! We have a range of classes at different levels so we are sure you’ll find something that fits.
Q. What if my child is already advanced in their musical instrument?
We have a number of classes available for pupils who learn instruments outside SMC;
music theory, choir, Kodály musicianship and our instrumental ensembles.
Q. What are the benefits of group classes vs individual lessons?
The ethos of Saturday Music Classes is of group tuition. We feel this benefits a youngster in a variety of ways that individual tuition cannot. Lifeskills such as listening, waiting for your turn, performing in front of others, trying and seeing others try and perhaps fail at first but in it together - this can be a transformative experience.
Q. When should I apply for Saturday Music Classes?
You can apply at any time throughout the year from when registrations open in the
summer term. Spaces throughout the year are subject to availability and waiting lists
may apply.
Q. Does my child need to audition?
A. No! Our classes are proudly non-selective and operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Q. Do I need to re-register my child every term?
A. No, your registration lasts for a full academic year (September to June).
Q. When do I pay for Saturday music classes?
A. Payment is due termly once you have received your invoice, prior to the start of each term.
Q. How do I pay?
A. Payment links are emailed out to you via Worldpay. You can also pay by card over the phone, by card, cheque or exact cash in the school office.
Q. What if I’m struggling to meet the fees?
A. There is means-tested assistance available through the School Bursar and the option to divide your fees into smaller, regular instalments.
Q. When will I know if my child has a space?
A. All classes are timetabled over the summer. You will be notified of your child’s classes in August, with classes starting in September. We will contact you via email if any issues arise during the timetabling process.
