Baroque and Renaissance Instruments Come to Life at St Mary’s Music School
Music lovers, curious beginners, and seasoned players alike are being invited to experience history in sound as St Mary’s Music School throws open its doors for a unique Baroque and Renaissance Instrument Discovery Day this May.
Taking place on Saturday 2 May (1.10pm – 6pm) at Coates Hall, the event celebrates an exciting recent bequest of rare historical instruments, offering the public a rare chance not just to see and hear them, but to play them.
Delivered in partnership with the renowned Dunedin Consort, the afternoon will be led by specialist musicians Amelia Shakespeare and Lucia Capellaro, who will guide visitors through the fascinating world of early wind, brass and stringed instruments – including viols and the medieval vielle.
From the moment guests arrive, they’ll be immersed in the rich soundscape of early music. The programme features live demonstrations, expert insights into how the instruments work, and the chance to explore their historical context. But the real highlight? Getting hands-on.
Participants will have the opportunity to try playing these extraordinary instruments themselves, with dedicated sessions and small-group guidance ensuring everyone gets a turn. For more experienced players, there’s also the chance to bring along their own instrument, collaborate with others, and even take part in a specialist coaching clinic led by Amelia and Lucia.
Open to anyone aged 15 and over with no prior musical experience required, the event is designed to be welcoming, engaging, and inspiring for all.
Best of all, entry is free, though advance registration is required.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, a passionate musician, or simply intrigued by the sounds of the past, this promises to be a memorable and hands-on journey into musical history.
