S5 (Year 12)

In S5 pupils specialise further for SQA National Qualifications known as Scottish Highers. Pupils are required to take Music, English and up to three other subjects from the list provided.

There is also a variety of extra-curricular provision including debating, maths competitions, science activities and occasional foreign trips which provide opportunities to explore areas of interest and develop new skills outside the classroom.

ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages

If English is not your first language then it may be possible to take ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) rather than English as a compulsory subject.

Subjects are:

Compulsory

  • English or ESOL
  • Music

Recommended – one Modern Language, Social Subject and Science from:

  • Mathematics
  • Art & Design
  • Modern & Classical Languages: French, German, Latin (according to demand), Italian (National 5 only), Spanish (according to demand)
  • Social Sciences: Geography, History
  • Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Non-examinable subjects:

  • Personal & Social Education
  • Physical Education

Because of our small class sizes and flexible approach it may be possible for pupils to also take some Advanced Highers in S5.
