St Mary's Music School ranks alongside the Yehudi Menuhin School, the Purcell School in London, and Chetham's in Manchester, as one of the most important specialist music schools in the country. When I worked as a professional violinist I came across a disproportionately large number of St Mary's alumni achieving eminence in the music industry. The City of Edinburgh Council now has the chance to support St Mary's in an ambitious redevelopment programme at the former Royal High School, fully funded from non-public funds, which will transform the work that the school will be able to do in the future.
It is hard to overstate the impact that this move would have on the school, and the potential for enhancing its work in the future, work which will help to cultivate the future musical stars of this country and others. It already brings great prestige to the City, but this move will open up completely new horizons.
It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the school, and I strongly urge the Council to find a way of supporting it.
