Ages 16 to 19 - Advanced Training Programme
The Advanced Training Programme provides an intensive foundation for young musicians wishing to apply to study music at conservatoire, music college or university in the UK or abroad.
The programme combines an academic and music curriculum which we develop in conversation with you and which aims to meet your individual needs. It is open to applicants aged 16 to 19 who apply for a two or three-year programme.
What will I learn?
Musically, you will have up to a minimum of two hours’ one-to-one tuition in your first study instrument and half an hour in your second study. You will also receive weekly coaching with a dedicated pianist, an opportunity which is usually only available at higher education level. Pianists will take part in Piano Forum.
Performance classes, in which you can seek constructive feedback from your peers, are another great way for you to strengthen your confidence and playing ability. There are also daily aural sessions and opportunities to develop your academic music.
Performance
Developing your performance skills and either performing individually, or playing with others in a variety of ensembles, will form a valuable structure to your time with us. Monthly jazz days also allow you to expand your improvisation skills and repertoire. There is a variety of ensembles, and students are also encouraged to form their own groups.
Opportunities to perform in public abound, from small lunchtime concerts in our Chapel to recitals and concerts held in a selection of Edinburgh venues. For composers you will be able to enjoy hearing your work played by your peers.
Learning from professionals
As well as working with our own expert teaching staff, you will have the opportunity to work with and learn from internationally renowned musicians and composers through masterclasses, workshops and our Celebrity 6 online series.
Working with composers
Our ground-breaking Seven Hills Project sees us working with eight composers in the build- up to our fiftieth anniversary in 2023. Each composer has been commissioned to write a new work and you may have the opportunity to work with them and be part of the ensemble performing the work in public and recording it for the very first time.
