About our Music Classes for Children
Our long established and very popular Saturday Music Classes for children aged 4 to 12 take place during term time at St Mary’s Music School. In a safe and caring social environment, some 150 local children discover the wonders of music, helped by experienced staff, all highly qualified in working with children through the arts. The emphasis is on having fun, while engaging young children in the magic of music making.
Families find St Mary’s Music School a vibrant and friendly place in which to spend time and catch up with friends and our lively café is an ideal venue for parents to catch up with each other during lessons.

Kodály Music Classes
For little ones, Kodály classes begin for children in their final pre-school year and are offered up to Primary 5 (age 9 to 10), according to demand. Kodály classes introduce children to music and rhythm through song and action and these classes encourage children's musicianship and listening skills, nurturing their enjoyment of music and building their confidence.

Our Values
We are proud of our Five Values of:
- Inclusion – SMC is non-selective and bursaries are available so everyone can access a top quality experience;
- Diversity – we welcome all types of family, no matter what your circumstance;
- Enjoyment – it is our aim to have children love their musical experience, no matter what class they attend, and want to come back each weekend;
- Learning – a great deal of learning takes place but it doesn’t feel like school. Connections are made through making and listening to music, and this helps children’s motor skills, cognitive abilities and general development as they enjoy classes; and
- Growth – children develop life skills as they learn, such as how to listen to others, wait for their turn and grow in confidence as they participate in classes. Families make friends that can last a lifetime.
Please note:
After more than a year of successful online teaching, we hope to be delivering all our classes in person from September, subject to Scottish Government regulations.
There may be some additional restrictions in September to ensure that all pupils, parents and staff remain safe, including the staggering of class start times. Any changes will be notified to parents well in advance.
We look forward to welcoming your children back to face-to-face teaching at Coates Hall.
