Andrew Robb

Andrew Robb is a jazz double bassist who grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland. After studying classical repertoire from the age of 7, he became interested in improvising and jazz and attended St Mary's Music School. In 2008, he studied jazz at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and completed a Masters in Jazz Performance at The Grieg Academy of Music in Bergen, Norway. He plays in a range of diverse projects across Europe and has won multiple awards for his playing, including the BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician of The Year 2009 and the 2nd Prize at the European Society of Bassists Jazz Competition in 2016.

Aside from being internationally in demand as a bassist he is fast becoming a sought-after educator, teaching double bass and improvisation privately and as a guest instrumental tutor at Edinburgh University. As a selected ambassador for both the National Youth Jazz Collective and National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, he was trained in the skills required for leading workshops. Since then he has gone on to give workshops across the UK, Europe and places as away as Mauritius and Kazakstan.

Some recent teaching highlights have included:

  • Leading jazz workshops with local jazz musicians in Mauritius on behalf of The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland
  • Regular Double Bass and Jazz Workshop Tutor for the National Children's Orchestra of Scotland String Training Ensemble
  • 3-day workshop for Aldeburgh Young Musicians at Snape Maltings alongside Byron Wallen, Cleveland Watkiss, Jim Watson and Afla Sackey, exploring the basic building blocks of music, improvising and composition
  • In Almaty, Kazakhstan, co-leading a Jazz/Classical collaboration between musicians from Norway and Kazakstan, alongside legendary Norwegian Pianist Dag Arnesen

Andrew is currently the bassist with the award winning Alan Benzie Trio, Henry Spencer's Juncture, Renato D'Aiello's Quartet resident on Monday nights at Ronnie Scotts and David Patrick's Rite of Spring Octet and Debussy Dectet.
