Virtual Open Days

We are delighted to be offering three Virtual Open Days this term:

  • Saturday 26th September, 10am to 11.30am
  • Tuesday 13th October, 7pm to 8.30pm
  • Sunday 8th November, 10am to 11.30am

If you are a young musician or a parent of a musically-talented child then attending an Open Day is the perfect opportunity to discover the world of St Mary's Music School. Meet current pupils, take a tour of the school, find out what lessons are like and take a peek inside the world of our instrumental pupils.

This online event will give young musicians and their parents a real insight into life at Scotland's national music school, one of five designated specialist music schools in the UK and the only one in Scotland.

You can discover how music plays such a huge part in every pupil's timetable, why boarding is such good fun and how school fees are supported by the Scottish Government's Aided Places scheme in recognition of our unique status. You can find out why our academic results are so exceptional, even though our only criteria for entry is musical ability and potential. Or you can take the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Registration is essential.

To secure your place please complete the registration form for the date you choose by clicking the link below.

Be A Chorister Afternoon - November 6th, 2020

Please be advised this event is likely to be held online and therefore will be adapted from the format below. Further details will be published shortly.

Being a chorister provides an excellent music and academic education and is open to boys and girls of all religious denominations or none, from age 7.

In this very special afternoon we welcome Primary Pupils P3-P5 who enjoy singing for a special opportunity to participate alongside the award-winning Choristers of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral and find out what life is like as a chorister.

We start with some fun warm-ups in the Cathedral with the Master of Music, Duncan Ferguson, and learn some new music together ready for a performance at the end of the day. Then we head to St Mary's Music School where children take part in an interactive lesson with current pupils, before afternoon tea and heading back to the Cathedral to change into formal dress and sing with the full Cathedral Choir for Evensong. Parents are invited to attend Evensong and will also have the opportunity to ask their own questions in a separate afternoon session.

The only requirement for children to attend is a passion for singing.

There are limited places, so enrol early to avoid disappointment! Choristers can begin their probation year at age 7 and from age 9 to 12 are full time pupils at St Mary's Music School.  You can find out more about being a chorister here. Financial support is available.

Please note: We are not currently able to offer boarding places to choristers, therefore the expectation is that choristers will be able to travel to the Cathedral six days a week.

Advisory Auditions and Full Auditions

If you think you are ready to apply to become a pupil or want to find out whether you have the level and potential we are looking for, then you can also apply either for an Advisory Audition, where the Panel can give you constructive feedback on your playing,  or you can apply for a full Audition online.

Find out more here.

Prefer to Visit Independently?

If you are considering applying to St Mary's and would like to find out more about the School then you are welcome to visit independently by arrangement. Visits usually take place on a Monday afternoon and are a chance for an informal chat with our Admissions Secretary and to have a tour of the school. Simply contact Mary Walls to arrange a suitable date.
