St Mary’s Cathedral is unique in Scotland in maintaining a daily choral traditional and in 1978 it became the first Cathedral in the UK to offer girls bursaries to sing with the boys as trebles.

“One of Scotland’s (indeed the UK’s) musical jewels” Gramophone Magazine

From performing in some of the world’s greatest concert venues, frequent television and radio broadcasts and acclaimed CD recordings to Christmas carols and choir football, the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral offers a unique opportunity to children from P4 to become Choristers.  They combine their school day with daily rehearsals and services, learning music from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century and learning up to two instruments in addition to their singing.

The Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral enjoys an international reputation through its recordings, broadcasts and tours.  The Choir’s recent recordings, of music by Anton Bruckner, Gabriel Jackson, John Sheppard and Stravinsky, all earned Gramophone Editor’s Choice. August 2016 saw the release of the latest recording of music by Stravinsky, with players from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and vocal soloists Ruby Hughes and Nicholas Mulroy.

The Choir sings at seven services each week of term time, during Holy Week and Easter, throughout Advent to Christmas Day, and during the Edinburgh International Festival.
