Folk & Traditional Music

It should not come as a surprise to learn of a thriving Folk Scene here, not only in Scottish Traditional Music, but, given our international profile, out of lively folk traditions from around the world. A typical St Mary’s Music School pupil invariably has a good Classical grounding, and a good ear, which makes for fertile exploration into entirely new areas! Pupils from the school have gained considerable success in high profile contests such as the BBC Young Musician of the Year and the BBC Jazz & Folk Awards and at the Royal National Mòd. 

Singer-Songwriter Jenn Butterworth makes regular visits into school to run workshops and classes; Richard Ingham also plays a role in bringing together the school’s Jazz and Folk elements.
