For the first time in its history, Friday and Saturday music classes for children are going online. In what is hoped will be a temporary measure for the Autumn term, all classes, which include group instrumental lessons, singing, music theory, Dalcroze and Kodály will be taught on Zoom.
Eleanor Parker, Co-ordinator of Friday and Saturday classes said "When restrictions due to Covid19 were introduced earlier in the year, we had to cancel all of our summer term's teaching which although necessary, was a great shame. We know many young children have been missing their music, not only because of what they learn but also because of the fun and social aspects they enjoy so much so we wanted to see what we could put in place for the Autumn. We are delighted that all of our teachers have been enthusiastic about delivering their lessons on Zoom and over the past few months they have become very experienced in that environment as they have been teaching pupils from the main school. We are completely confident, that while it cannot match the experience of playing in a room together, every child will still benefit hugely from taking part."
Throughout the summer term St Mary's Music School has been delivering its academic and music curriculum to all its full-time pupils online, so transferring Friday and Saturday Music Classes for the Autumn term seemed to be a natural progression. Dr Kenneth Taylor, Headteacher said, "In a period when there is so much uncertainty for young children, being able to come together in a group environment to learn and develop skills in music can be an enormous benefit, both in terms of wellbeing and providing a creative and social outlet. All of our teachers have developed their own skills over recent months to ensure the online experience is of an equally high standard as our everyday teaching and I know that they too are looking forward to connecting with all the children involved. "
Registration for online classes for the Autumn term is now open. All classes attract a discount of 20% off normal fees to reflect the online environment. Bursary support is also available.
