At Stockbridge Parish Church, on the morning of Friday 11 May, pupils and 66 guests representing 16 Scottish schools gathered to learn from this highly respected French violinist. To be taught by Monsieur Capuçon, four violinists from St Mary’s Music School played as well as a young violinist from the RCS Junior Conservatoire. Four of the pupils were accompanied by Mr John Cameron whilst Emma Baird was accompanied by senior pupil Ryan Corbett on accordion. With significant expertise, Monsieur Capuçon combined serious teaching with humour and great sensitivity, so that each pupil received his advice in a safe and supportive atmosphere.
At the close of the event, Monsieur Capuçon gave an inspiring rendition of Massenet Meditation from Thais accompanied by Mr Cameron. Performing this piece of music with the greatest of feeling, Renaud beautifully illustrated many of the points he had shared throughout the morning. Comments, from the pupils who performed, illustrate the value they took from this opportunity to play and be taught by one of the world's leading violinists.
Oceane Taneus-Miller explained:
“It was wonderful to play for Renaud Capuçon. The moment I stepped on stage my nerves at playing for such a renowned and talented violinist were lost. I wanted only to share my music to the best of my ability and he managed to enrapture, not only the players, but the audience with his capacity to pick out what each individual needed. He saw me listening for the sound and tone which make my violin play with emotion. He helped me realise, I should think more carefully about bow distribution and technical aspects affecting the tone. He encouraged me to make my playing sound effortless so the listener feels lost in the music. I loved how his playing had such a beautiful, clear and pure tone and his phrasing was as a dancer would move to music. It enthralled me when he asked us to play ‘warmer’, brightening the sound rather than asking us to play ‘more’ which could make the music ‘aggressive’. Not just was he an amazing violinist but he shared with us so much constructive knowledge that I feel the Masterclass has built my confidence and developed my playing."
Marie Sophie said:

His entertainment and humour balanced perfectly with his expertise and knowledge to give me some very useful tips towards my technical and musical development."
Briona commented:
“I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to participate in such an inspiring masterclass. It was a fantastic experience and I look forward to using the advice I was given to improve my future performances."

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Capuçon masterclass. His advice was given in a friendly and light-hearted way which was easy to understand, so I was able to respond quickly. He covered many aspects of my playing including tone production, interpretation, bow technique and balancing with the accompaniment."
