In a continuation of their remarkable music series filmed at one of Edinburgh’s most unique and iconic venues, Pianodrome will be releasing the latest in their series of intimate one-off performances from local and travelling artists today, Friday December 17th, this time featuring pupils from St Mary’s Music School.
The programme features Neil McCracken and Eve Boulos who both graduated in June, and senior pupil Cliodhna Scott. The programme includes original jazz compositions as well as performances of Telemann, and Frank Martin. It will air on Youtube as part of the Piandrome Session series.
Set up in 2016, Pianodrome CIC is a charitable organisation which, according to its founders (and bandmates) Tim Vincent-Smith and Matthew Wright, was conceived to “create participatory, community-centred sculptures, made entirely from otherwise disused pianos. As part of a large network of makers, artists, performers and volunteers, we articulate the structure we build through festivals, one-off events and educational experiences.” The Pianodrome in Edinburgh has become an iconic symbol of community and cultural resilience in Scotland’s capital. In August 2018, the 100-seater Pianodrome attracted 18,000 visitors, critical acclaim and international recognition when installed at the Botanic Gardens as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and today the amphitheatre is sited at Granton supported by a team of 100 volunteers.
Of the collaboration with St Mary’s Music School pupils, Wright commented, “We devised the music series during lockdown as a way of showcasing the incredible music talent that exists in Scotland and we felt it was important to include these young musicians from St Mary’s as part of that."
John Cameron, Head of Keyboard at St Mary’s Music School said, “Pianos are made from a host of interesting materials and possess their own exotic shapes, colouring and character. Every piano is an individual work of art, so it is wonderful that in this very unique and special place, abandoned pianos are gifted a second life. It creates a magical atmosphere. We were delighted that our pupils could experience this wonderful venue for themselves and hope to be working with Pianodrome more in future. ”
